April 17 Purchased this week:
Potting soil – 8 bags
Shower wand for garden hose
Pruner
Safer soap concentrate
Spray bottle for mixing and using Safer soap
Total spent: $79.88
Did not purchase any shovels/spades – can we not ask volunteers to bring their own? Same with the wheelbarrow – is it really necessary? Do we have room to store it?
Barbara was going to get Pot Makers from Lee Valley.
Did not get any stools for the children to stand on – maybe we could put the word out and ask if anyone can donate their old ones.
Karen and I shopped at Fiesta Farms last night and saw a great rack system (VRE Grow Shelf). Cart and shelving system on wheels, 4 adjustable shelves, each able to accommodate 5 flats, could be rolled out for hardening off or cleaning. Approx cost – $300

SHAWN:
I would like to know what you think of the wheelbarrow from homedepot. It had a good review. I dont want to get a construction size and not the cheapest either or one made of plastic.

I was looking at the bc website and I think we should buy some shade cloth, it is getting too hot in there.

martin,
re: wheelbarrow…
i haven’t been to home depot to ‘try it out’, but from the website it looks ok. ?
however, i have an aversion to ‘home de pot’ and would recommend some places closer to the park:
Downtown Lumber – ossington, just S of dundas
M L Lumber – dundas, just W of bathurst

I too have a laundry sink but we dont have a drain for the sink, it could be neat to use for mixing soil if we plug the hole with concrete.

M and L
I have checked out prices at M and L which are better than ossington.
They dont have the soiless mix we need to start seeds though.
People could walk there and throw it all in the wheelbarrow. I saw a nice planting spade at leevalley, will buy it.

i installed two hooks for coats & bags on one of the wooden shelves/racks near the west door.
let me know if more are needed – but i assumed this requirement would be minimal w/ the warming weather.
i also dropped off another pail for mixing soil.
if “table assistant” (martin?) has a laundry sink – can we just use yours and find a way to block the drain hole?
i was unable to fix the door handle(s) … a string of bad luck.
should we just wait for the city to fix it?

Shawn:
Could you replace it with a new one sooner. We might get a better lock from the city too.
I would suggest using a wheelbarrow to mix soil if we need to buy one too.
Can you help me get the sink, it is heavy and it needs a nicer frame too.
great for washing my feet too after the mud bath. mmmm

what is this “pot maker”?
does it involve newspaper strips? if so, i have one that can be used.

Hi Sarah,
Yes, that’s the one? Do you have one to donate?

By the way, I don’t think we want to plug the sink with cement. How about a bucket under for water to drain into?

We need shovels for using in the garden around the greenhouse.
We need a seed start mix not potting soil. sorry i was not clear about that.
We need people tommorow to move compost but we have no shovels.
Please bring shovels compost will be there by 1pm at our park for the greenhouse as stated at the Parks meeting 2 weeks ago with Anna and myself.
I thought we were getting a third table made with Shawn?
Please bring up ideas at the next meeting. I have a connection at Fiesta Farms i might use if needed

See my note re. shovels and wheelbarrow on the home page comments. Also, we did consider whether or not soil or starting mix was what was needed. We figured there is lots of repotting to do in the next while so bought that.
About the ‘grow cart’ we saw at Fiesta Farms: we will bring all the info to the meeting so this and other ideas for creating surface space can be discussed.
Another spending priority, it seems, is to get the heat properly regulated. We might have to have something fixed or installed… Could cost $$$

We now have attached a shade cloth on loan from Krista at Scadding
If anyone has spare tomato seedlings she really needs some.
Jim and I brought some logs for around the garden peremiter and pathway
Karin the permission is lost here i can get in to this blog.
The sink is in the right place Shawn , thanks. I have another one but its ugly.
Please use the plastic on the benches to prevent rotting of the wood, thanks.
We also brought in a fan to reduce potential mold and to circulate the cool air.

News Flash:
We have a loan from Krista of shade cloth.
It will be up today and taken down when annuals leave the greenhouse.
We will order our own when the measurements and design is finalized.
Not everyone will like the new decor but It will help with the temperature. It might not look wonderful to all of us but even Martha Stewart must use it.
I would suggest that any small seedlings not be in paper rolls as they dry out fast. Bring in any used cell packs people through out when they but pansies.
We will move perennials off the benches but we need to keep them off the concrete since it absorbs heat. Any suggestions like bricks and woodbeams?
The new people do not have any space So if there are extra vegetables they would need please put them aside for them so they dont grow the same ones. Take anything that you can home for your window if possible.

i finally found proper door hardware to replace the broken handles.
i decided to install them w/out the lock cylinder – we can use the deadbolts to lock the doors (this will also reduce the amount of keys needed).
i also secured 3 1/2 legs of the laundry sink.
i will repair this install and plug the drain.
can we confirm that the laundry sink is to be used for soil mixing only and not any water use?!

I put four buckets in the GH today, three labelled for refuse, and one under the sink drain. They are all a little small, but larger ones will probably turn up at Arts Junktion, so I will grab them when I see them.
